Richard (Dick) Brackett, President
As president of High Desert Advisors, Dick brings a broad and deep educational background and over 40 years of business experience to the firm and his clients.
After earning a bachelor of arts degree in history, political science and philosophy from Michigan State University, Dick went on to earn an MBA in management and finance from the University of Chicago, followed by a bachelor of science degree in mechanical and aerospace engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology. Dick also completed course work at the Southwest College of Law and graduate work in physics at the University of Illinois.
Dick began his professional career as an entrepreneur, followed on by several years experience in the real estate development, construction and property management arenas. Changing careers, Dick moved to the floor of the Chicago Board of Trade, working to learn the futures trading business. From there he joined Conti Commodity Inc., before moving into the financial markets with Bear Stearns & Co. Dick gained additional financial management experience in farm mortgage lending and rural residential lending before moving on to become a financial advisor with UBS Paine Webber and Prudential Securities. At Payne Webber, Dick specialized in working with individual clients and companies to manage investment portfolios; advising clients on retirement planning, 401k, profit share, and other qualified retirement plans.
In 2003 Dick founded High Desert Advisors, a registered investment advisory firm, specializing in investment advice and guidance for individuals and institutions having liquid asset investment portfolios - stocks, mutual funds, bonds, and other fixed income assets. High Desert Advisors is registered in the State of New Mexico with the Securities and Exchange Commission. As president of High Desert Advisors, Dick helps clients create investment goals, provides allocation of assets, and manages their portfolios.
Dick believes in the Rotary concept of Service Above Self and in giving back to the community. He has been a Rotarian for over 15 years, a member of the Rotary Club of Albuquerque since 2000. Dick is also a member of the New Mexico Advisor Council, a grassroots consortium he organized in late 2007. Council members serve as mentors to small business owners in need of seasoned business advice. Dick also served as host of the popular local Sunday afternoon radio show "The Ordinary Millionaire".
Iris joined High Desert Advisors in 2008 as an investment advisor after more than 30 years of successful business experience in finance, marketing, investment and portfolio management.
She earned a bachelor's degree in elementary education from Northwestern University, a master's degree in mathematics education from the University of Illinois and also completed all course work at the doctoral level in the area of mathematics education.
Iris began her professional career as an investment advisor in a private sector firm working with clients hedging and investing in the commodity futures markets. She then shifted her focus from the private sector to the banking sector, where she spent twelve years working with an institutional client base in the sale of treasuries, mortgage backed securities and other specialized securities. During the mid 1990's, Iris worked for the Chicago Stock Exchange in the area of marketing where she was responsible for soliciting local companies to list on the exchange; she also served as a liaison between floor brokers and exchange administration. Prior to joining the investment advisor team at High Desert Advisors, Iris worked with UBS Financial Services and Prudential Securities as a financial advisor working with individual and corporate clients. In her role with UBS, Iris managed investment portfolios, advised clients on retirement planning and plans. At High Desert Advisors, Iris continues to work with individual and business clients to help them meet their financial goals. She performs cash flow analysis, ascertains risk tolerances for her investor clients, and designs asset allocations to meet her clients' goals.
In her spare time, Iris has volunteered with the Literacy Committee of the Rotary Club of Albuquerque where she served as a volunteer tutor for children.
Thomas A. Crow, President Crow Financial Advisors
Tom has been managing investments since June of 2000, and is now responsible for the investment positions in all client portfolios, as well as writing monthly market commentaries and periodic securities memorandums.
After graduating from New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, NM in 1990 with a BS in Electrical Engineering and a concentration in Laser and Electro-Optics, he went to work for Decade Optical Systems, Inc., in Albuquerque as an electro-optical engineer and later division director. After eight years with the small defense contractor he had also acquired an MBA from the University of Phoenix in Albuquerque. In mid-2000 he took the opportunity to employ his business and technical skills and accepted an invitation to join Asset Management.
Tom’s technical background affords him a thorough understanding of the “new-economy,” high-tech business world dominated by computers, semiconductors, lasers, fiber optics, and advanced telecommunications. His small-business experience provides the technical, fundamental, and economic analysis, marketing, and management skills needed to build on the company’s well-established base. His close association with the Baynes, even beyond their retirement at the end of 2005 ensures the continuation of integrity of the family tradition, attention to detail, and primary focus on excellence in client service and meticulous attention to detail.
Tom and his wife Vicki have three children. He is active in his church, Faith Lutheran, where he sings in the choir, sings and plays piano and keyboards in the Emmaus praise band, serves on the Endowment Committee for the Faith Foundation and as a member of the Vision and Mission Team.
Tom serves on the school board for Hope Christian School in Albuquerque, where his children attend, and is acting president of the Hope Foundation. Tom also serves on the Board of Quintessence Choral Artists of the Southwest.
